1962 Huascarán debris avalanche at Ranrahirca
On the evening of 10 January 1962 the periphery of a glacier on the slopes of Mount Huascarán, which rises some 22,000 feet in the Andes, came apart and roared down the mountain. The towns of Ranrahirca and Huarascucho were buried under 40 feet of ice, mud, trees, boulders and other debris. The mass continued until it reached the Santa River, where it blocked the flow and caused flooding.
