Oscar B. Balch House

Wright had left his family and Oak Park for Europe in 1909; the Balch House, 1911, was the first commission he took after coming back. The design is his Prairie idiom at full maturity in compressed form: flat roof, overhanging eaves, a raised terrace, and an entrance turned away from the street so that arrival is deliberately delayed. It is a private house on North Kenilworth and has changed hands on the open market in recent years.
