Café Chris

It is usually counted as the oldest café in the Jordaan, said to have opened as a beer house in 1624. The story goes that builders on the Westertoren collected their pay here, though one guide points out there is no evidence for it. A billiard table fills the middle of the room, and the house ritual is the kopstootje: a jenever slurped hands-free at the bar with a beer beside it. The room is so short of space that the toilet cistern sits outside the toilet.
