TWA Flight 800
The Boeing 747-131 was on a scheduled IFR flight from New York to Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris. At 13,500 feet an explosion tore off the nose, which fell into the ocean, and the aircraft came down in the Atlantic near East Moriches, New York at about 2031 eastern daylight time. The National Transportation Safety Board determined the probable cause to be an explosion of the centre wing fuel tank resulting from ignition of the flammable fuel/air mixture inside it.
