Swissair Flight 111
The MD-11, registered HB-IWF, was flying from New York to Geneva when a fire broke out on board, and it came down in the Atlantic while attempting an emergency landing at Halifax. The crash site was about five nautical miles southwest of Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, roughly 8 kilometres from shore and about equidistant between Peggys Cove and Bayswater. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada concluded that flammable material used in the aircraft's structure allowed the fire to spread beyond the crew's control, and reported that the RCMP found no evidence of any explosive or incendiary device or other criminal act in the fire's initiation. Identifying the remains of all 229 passengers took until December 1998.
