Typhoon Sarika (2016)
Called Karen in the Philippines, Sarika intensified rapidly as it turned west-northwest toward Luzon and reached its peak just before coming ashore in Aurora early on 16 October. It went on to affect South China and Vietnam, striking Hainan harder than any October typhoon there since 1971: close to 6,000 houses damaged, 130,000 people cut off from telecommunications, and almost 381,000 hectares of banana, cassava, papaya and rubber crops affected. Economic losses reached US$894 million.
