Hôtel Tassel

Built in 1892–93 for Emile Tassel, a friend of the architect, and generally treated as the founding work of Art Nouveau in Brussels, alongside Paul Hankar's own house of the same moment. Horta took the theories of Viollet-le-Duc on exposed structure and applied them to a private townhouse: the iron column and the staircase it carries are the argument of the building. The stair hall, with its painted mural and mosaic floor, is the image reproduced on the World Heritage listing.
