A tropical low formed in the Coral Sea east of Lockhart River on 4 March 2009, reached category 3 on 6 March and intensified to category 5 on 7 March, peaking with winds of 215 km/h and a pressure of 924 mbar. Hamish made its closest approach to land on 8 March, then continued southeast parallel to the Queensland coast while holding category 4 intensity or higher for several days.
