Baku Metro fire
A train of five fully loaded cars had just left Ulduz station for Nariman Narimanov when it stopped about 200 metres out, and fire broke out in the tunnel between the two stations. Reports record 289 dead and 265 injured, with a number of those who got clear of the train surviving. The cause is disputed: an electrical malfunction in equipment at the rear of the fourth car, a sparkover or electric arc, was put forward, and sabotage was also suggested.
