Pastéis de Belém

When the Jerónimos monastery closed in 1834 the monks passed their custard tart recipe to the owners of the sugar refinery next door, who opened this bakery in 1837. The recipe is still held as a house secret and the tarts leave the oven for the counter, served warm with cinnamon and sugar alongside a bica. The tiled rooms behind the shopfront are the oldest specialist pastry premises in the city.
