2022 Papua New Guinea earthquake
On 11 September 2022 the shock struck the northern part of Morobe Province, with the epicentre some 66 to 67 km from Kainantu, a town of about 10,000 people and the nearest sizeable settlement. Cracked roads, broken pipelines and falling rubble were reported there, and damage to the Ramu hydropower station left Madang and Morobe provinces without power. Seven people were killed and twenty-four injured. Moment magnitude estimates differ, given as 7.6 to 7.7.
