1996 Biak earthquake
The rupture off the north coast of Papua sent waves onto Biak, where a run-up of 7.7 m was measured at Madori on the west coast and waves reached 5.4 m at Korem in the north. A localised submarine landslide was considered a plausible explanation for the strength of the waves in western Biak. The Indonesian government supplied rice to those affected immediately afterwards.
