1998 Papua New Guinea tsunami
An undersea earthquake on 17 July struck about 18 miles, or 29 kilometres, off the northwest coast of Papua New Guinea, and the wave came ashore there shortly afterwards. A United States Geological Survey study examined whether the source of the wave was the earthquake itself or a submarine landslide, and the catalogue records both. The reported result was 2,000 dead and 500 missing.
