Harvard Yard

Twenty-five acres of lawn and mature trees that began as a seventeenth-century cow pasture and became the college green when New College was established in 1636. The Cultural Landscape Foundation credits work here to Charles Bulfinch, H.H. Richardson and McKim, Mead & White, and the buildings vary widely in character while staying close in size and massing, so the canopy and the enclosing gates do the unifying. It went onto the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and remains privately owned by the university, though the gates are open.
