Palace of Versailles

The equestrian events and the modern pentathlon were staged in the gardens rather than the palace, on a temporary arena and stands erected on the Étoile Royale esplanade west of the Grand Canal. Cross-country ran through the park itself, and the entire overlay was removed afterwards, leaving the grounds as they were.
