Johnson Square

One of the first four squares laid out under the 1733 plan, on Bull Street at the north end of the grid. The commercial district around it was also the centre of Savannah's trade in enslaved people: research summarised by Go South Savannah records that people were held in yards near Johnson Square, and that the businesses of those trading in or profiting from forced labour clustered on and around Johnson and Ellis Squares.
