Ellis Square

Originally Decker Square, laid out in 1733 as part of the third ward, and for roughly a century the site of four successive public markets. The city leased the square as a multi-storey parking garage from 1954 until 2004; the garage was demolished in 2006 and the rebuilt public square dedicated in 2009, with parking moved underground. The Congress for the New Urbanism documents the restoration process, which ran to more than twenty public meetings and a three-day design charrette.
