Fort Hood shooting
A gunman opened fire early in the afternoon of November 5, 2009, inside a processing centre at Fort Hood in central Texas, where soldiers about to deploy overseas or returning from deployment received medical screenings. History.com reports 13 people killed and more than 30 wounded, nearly all of them unarmed soldiers. The Center for Homeland Defense and Security notes that as a matter of practice soldiers did not carry weapons at the post.
