Market Theatre
Opened in Newtown in 1976, in the old Indian fruit market, and reached its fiftieth year in 2026 with a season that began with Marabi and Blues in the Night under artistic director Greg Homann. Its standing by 1992 was such that it was the only South African house able to sponsor the Dance Theatre of Harlem's month-long tour that broke the cultural boycott, though the staging had to move to the larger Joburg Theatre. The decline of the inner city in the late 1990s and 2000s cut ticket sales badly enough to bring the theatre near financial collapse.
