Johannesburg Art Gallery
Established in 1910 in Joubert Park and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, this is the city's principal public art collection. A plan by the Johannesburg Development Agency and the City of Johannesburg to move the artworks to Museum Africa drew public opposition in early 2026: the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation and Friends of JAG stated they could not support the relocation in its current form, and the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng called for it to be halted. Both groups say warnings about building conditions and alternative storage were raised earlier and not acted on.
