Städel Museum

The Städelsches Kunstinstitut und Städtische Galerie dates to 1816 and gained an underground extension for its contemporary holdings during the city's museum renewal programme. Its exhibitions still make the news pages: a 2026 show traced a thousand years of images of Mary Magdalene, from sinner to penitent to figure of identification.
