2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake
The undersea rupture began at 00:58:53 UTC, 07:58:53 local time, on 26 December 2004, with its epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, and broke a 1,600 km portion of the boundary between the Indo-Australian and southeastern Eurasian plates. Fault slip of up to 15 metres occurred near Banda Aceh, while rapid slip north along the Nicobar and Andaman Islands was much smaller; tsunami and geodetic observations indicate additional slow slip in the north over 50 minutes or longer. Moment magnitude estimates differ, given as 9.1 to 9.3.
