1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake
The epicentre lay near Guandao Mountain in what is now Miaoli County, and the shaking affected an area of 315 square kilometres between southern Hsinchu and northern Taichung on 21 April 1935. Around 3,300 people were killed and nearly 12,000 injured. The writer Yang Kui recorded passing trucks, oxcarts and trolleys loaded with coffins as he travelled to Tuntzechiao, which he had heard was completely destroyed. Later relocation of the aftershocks points to a northwest-dipping, deep-seated back-thrust beneath the area.
