Artillery Wood Cemetery

The site lay behind the German front line on the morning of 31 July 1917, and burials began once the Guards Division took the ground during the Battle of Pilckem Ridge; it was used until the German spring offensive of March 1918 and enlarged afterwards, to 1,307 graves of which 801 are identified. Two poets killed on that first day lie here: Hedd Wyn at II.F.11 and Francis Ledwidge of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers at II.B.5. The plaque marking where Hedd Wyn was mortally wounded stands at the crossroads between Pilkem and Langemark.
