Pointe du Hoc

A coastal artillery battery on the cliff between the Utah and Omaha sectors, and one of the German positions that actively fired on Allied operations on 6 June 1944. It is counted among the batteries, with Saint-Marcouf, Longues-sur-Mer and Merville, that presented a real obstacle to the landings out of the 23 German batteries operational on the eve of D-Day. The ground is still shaped by the pre-invasion bombardment rather than tidied flat, and the site is worked into the D-Day itineraries run from the Mémorial de Caen.
