Babuino

A reclining Silenus set into a wall fountain, commissioned by the merchant Alessandro Grandi in the 1570s and mocked by Romans as a baboon for its coarse features, which was enough to get the street renamed from Via Clementina to Via del Babuino. Its position in the quarter where foreign residents lived made it a lower-risk place to post pasquinades, and the replies pinned here acquired their own name, babuinate. The fountain remains in the wall of the street it named.
